We don't like to throw statistics around until we have researched them, so what would you say if we told you the majority of
Australians under 35y old prefer to communicate via SMS (over voice call & email).
You would probably say the same thing we did "What the...". Recently SMS usages has been on a huge upswing, doubling year on year but more recently we have seen new and innovative reasons as to why. SMS stands for 'Short Message Service' and is a standard simple form of packet data containing 160 characters, but these characters can also be extended to innovative uses. Prior to the invention of MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) which we will discuss next month, SMS was able to integrate WAP links and visual recognitions to send more information.
This was quite simple technology but meant marketing managers had to factor in not only the cost of the SMS delivery but the web content creation and hosting, which some five years back was in the thousands - compared with a few hundred dollars today. Skip five years forward and we have MMS, Mobile Apps and on device portals. www.global-mobile.com.au
