Mobile Apps for business - the pros and cons

You need to get an iPhone App(application) or your business will fail, oh and
you need a Blackberry App or your business is not cross platform, oh and you need an App to suit the Nokia platform because Nokia holds a huge stake in the handset market. Sound familiar? Sick of being told you need this and you need that? Well read on for a down the line approach.

Lets get one thing straight, those in Australia who have a Smartphone comprise of less than 25% of the market, but those that consumer most of the data period, also comprise of less than 25% of the market. So should you invest in an app(application) knowing you have a small reach even though you know they fall into the "high propensity to use" basket? In my opinion it comes down to the product you have on offer and then spreading your investment and risk.

A mobile website will open you up to some 85%-95% of the market as most phone can surf the internet. The problem is companies tend to only build apps and market to the people who can use the apps.

So wouldn’t it make sense to build a mobile website and market to those who can use it - a much wider audience? Go to the link to read on...

MMS usage in Australia

MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Service and is fast becoming the weapon of choice for brands and retailers.
Way way way back in 2001 Japanese technologists were using a picture technology which spurred the creation of the picture phone. In 2004 the MMS World Congress came together to announce a set of standards and protocols - thus the explosion of new handsets and technologies took off. Nokia took the lead with a huge 80%+ market share in Asia Pacific and a 50%+ share globally, as technology increases so too does the manufacturers and in 2010 every Tom, Dick and Harry is trying to produce a handset.
Although the iPhone has dramatically changed the mobile landscape with the introduction of touch screen technology and the App store, it's how we interact with our mobile phone that paves the way for innovative technology creations. I will delve further into the iPhone landscape next month. Back to MMS. MMS allows for up to two thousand characters (compared with 160 in SMS), images, animated giff, compressed video and sounds. This is obviously a dream come true for marketers looking to connect one on one with consumers. The reason being not only does a mobile phone offer one on one communication with no advertising clutter, but an interactive means to communicate.
MMS is now used to send viral video promotions, mobile coupons which drive consumers in store to purchase and even mobile tickets which replace the old school paper ticket. MMS is truly a universal turnkey solution for any business looking to generate more sales with a low cost per acquisition

SMS usage in Australia

We don't like to throw statistics around until we have researched them, so what would you say if we told you the majority of
Australians under 35y old prefer to communicate via SMS (over voice call & email).
You would probably say the same thing we did "What the...". Recently SMS usages has been on a huge upswing, doubling year on year but more recently we have seen new and innovative reasons as to why. SMS stands for 'Short Message Service' and is a standard simple form of packet data containing 160 characters, but these characters can also be extended to innovative uses. Prior to the invention of MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) which we will discuss next month, SMS was able to integrate WAP links and visual recognitions to send more information.

This was quite simple technology but meant marketing managers had to factor in not only the cost of the SMS delivery but the web content creation and hosting, which some five years back was in the thousands - compared with a few hundred dollars today. Skip five years forward and we have MMS, Mobile Apps and on device portals. www.global-mobile.com.au

Mobile Use in Australia

The mobile phone is now the number one “must have” personal item, a huge 72% of consumers surveys in Asia Pacific would rather lose their wallet full of credit cards or their house keys before their mobile phone.
Mobile phone saturation in Australia has already exceeded 100%. What’s that you say, how many active sim cards could we be possible using? Try approximately  23million, and remember there is only approx 22.3m people in Australian. www.global-mobile.com.au
